Origin
The Half Marathon road race or 21K, is the Marathon’s little brother. The Marathon owes its existence to Pierre de Coubertin, the creator of the modern Olympic Games and to the Philhellene author Mickael Breal.
They were inspired by the historic Battle of Marathon in 490 BC and the messenger Athenian soldier, who was sent by general Miltiades to announce the happy event of victory to the Athenians and died exclaiming his last words :"Nenikikamen"-a word symbol now of overexertion and self-denial.
The Half Marathon Kalambaka–Trikala
In the memory of the runner and co-founder of the Trikala Runners Club, Thanasis Stamopoulos
The Runners Club of Trikala, wishing to honor the memory of its beloved friend, organized in 2008 its first half-marathon race from Kalampaka to Trikala, while giving it his name.
In the first race held on Sunday, March 30, 2008, about 330 runners attended, a staggering number for those days, with the winner being an athlete from Trikala - Fanis Skoufias, member of a historic club - with a time of 1.11.41. Equally successful were the second and the third races with about 200 participants.
In 2011, however, the Half Marathon was impressively upgraded reaching the very large number of 749 enrollments, while in 2012 the entries exceeded 1000 and the organization included the 6K Road Race and the 1K Kids Run.
Every year, both the Half Marathon Kalampaka–Trikala and the 5K Road Race with the 1K Kids Run, become even better and the aim of the organizing committee is to offer every time even better services so that the whole tournament will constitute a unique experience for all participants.
